Mbaki was born in 1973 in Berkeley, California of Tanzanian parents who were studying at the University of California. He spent most of his childhood in Tanzania until 1991 when he returned to the United States to attend college. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from San Jose State University in 1996 and worked for 10 years as a software engineer in Silicon Valley before returning to Tanzania in 1997 to become Opportunity Education’s representative.

Mbaki was a Board Member of the Bay Area Tanzanian Community Organization and researching a number of technology-based development projects for Tanzania while still in the U.S. when he met Opportunity Education. These will continue after his return to Tanzania. He is very focused on playing a significant role in the development of Africa and his return to Tanzania is a result of that focus and desire.

"“I believe that Opportunity Education can have a very significant impact on the lives of millions of children in Tanzania and elsewhere who so desperately need that additional lift so that they can grow up to become economically productive members of their societies."
